Raccogliere le Prugne (Plum Harvest)

Today’s short post; the last one for a while. There is a family emergency back home; we fly back to the states in the morning.

Today, things were almost back to normal. I spent the morning with Ettore, and most of us had a nice pre-lunch swim.

Vincenzo has been anxious to harvest the plum tree—they are perfect right now. Joe said, “I’ll do it!”, and he, like my grandparents and his, and all the grandparents before them, collected fruit from the orchard.

Ettore is helping to harvest the prunes.

The fruit cycle at la vigne is: cherries, apricots, plums, late plums, pears, grapes, apples. There is fruit on the table every day.

Cinema Paradiso and more

We shot our bleary selves out of bed and were on the road to the Arab side of the island by 8:00. I’m not sure what I packed. Driving along for about an hour, we met with Vincenzo and Mariella’s friends at a service stop. We had breakfast and organized ourselves, and a couple of hours later, we were lost. I told Vincenzo that I’m very happy this also happens to Sicilians. No matter. We cut through some of the most beautiful pastoral scenery imaginable. This side of the island is truly lovely; the photos from the car window don’t do it justice. Festa di Sant' Antonio

Today, Ettore and I resumed our normal routine. As I'm starting this blog, I realize that I will go downstairs in just a bit to check on him. Sometimes we get together in the afternoon, and the girls are off school now; they may join us. They attend a program called CREST. I believe it's only for part of the day. I remember sending my kids to a Lutheran vacation bible school in town, although I had not even a remote affiliation with the church. The kids were bored without their structured school routine and liked the activities (e.g., a visiting animal farm), and I got all of my chores done while they were gone for the morning. Maybe CREST serves the same dual purpose. I caught up on some news, mainly the weekend Pride festivities in Rome. I read a bit more about the January 6th insurgence hearings.
